Job description

The Donders Sleep & Memory Lab runs a major research line the cognitive neuroscience of REM sleep. In contrast to recent advances in the research of non-REM sleep function and physiology, the neural mechanisms and biological functions of the wake-like activity during REM sleep are still elusive. The project aims towards a cognitive neuroscience of REM sleep within three research lines. First, a comprehensive physiological characterization of human REM sleep and its substates will be pursued, utilizing large sleep EEG datasets and recent developments in neuroimaging. Second, the neural basis of memory impairments during REM sleep will be elucidated by investigating hippocampal activity and connectivity. Third, the neural mechanisms of impaired reflective capacity during REM sleep will be clarified with the phenomenon of lucid dreaming, i.e. the phenomenon of becoming aware of the dream state during ongoing sleep. The project will test the hypothesis that the characteristic cognitive impairments experienced during REM sleep might actually serve biological functions. The successful candidate will lead different research projects within this general framework; will be closely involved in daily supervision of MSc students assisting the project; and will participate in the vibrant Donders Graduate School.

The project is embedded in the unique infrastructure of the Donders Institute for Brain, Cognition and Behaviour. The Centre for Cognitive Neuroimaging offers three 3 Tesla MRI systems, MR-compatible systems for recording sleep EEG and peripheral psychophysiological measures, a 275-channel MEG system, an EEG-TMS laboratory, and state-of-the-art computational facilities. All facilities are fully research-dedicated laboratories with excellent technical support. The Donders Institute furthermore provides a unique and stimulating learning environment for young researchers, including a high-profile graduate school and in-house methodological expert courses.

Sleep research is a vibrant and rapidly growing field at the Donders Institute, with several new research groups in human and animal sleep research. Development of novel sleep research methodologies is embedded in the strong neuroimaging expertise of the Donders Institute as a whole.

The project is further embedded in the Radboud University Medical Center. Radboud UMC strives to be a leading developer of sustainable, innovative and affordable healthcare to improve the health and wellbeing of people and society in the Netherlands and beyond.
